Understanding Feelings
“Feelings are Important”
Suggested Grade Levels
K, 1, 2 and 3
Overview
This program uses a fun and interactive performance to help kids identify and better
understand their feelings, and the feelings of others. The characters talk about
where emotions come from, and that it’s important to acknowledge them. They also
help children develop problem-solving skills and healthy ways to express themselves.
Script Scenario
Melody James, a curious and sensitive 11-year old, and her friend Brenda Dubrowski,
have been assigned a homework project entitled, “Feelings are Important.” Brenda,
who is frustrated because she is having trouble coming up with a good idea for her
project, is surrounded by crunched up balls of paper. Melody comes along and the
two friends discuss how many different kinds of feelings there are. Both girls explore
positive ways to express their emotions, as well as people to go to when they need
someone to listen.
Objectives
- Explore what feelings tell us about ourselves and others.
- Discuss the importance of acknowledging emotions.
- Encourage children to talk about their feelings with friends and trusted adults.
- Provide constructive ways for kids to handle strong emotions.
Format
This 30-minute program consists of a scripted-story puppet presentation, followed
by a guided question and answer session. During the Q & A time, the puppets reinforce
learning objectives and encourage children to share their questions and concerns.
To extend learning and repeat key lessons, all children receive a take-home Kids on
the Block bookmark imprinted with the program’s messages, and they are encouraged to
write letters or emails to the puppets.
To help Kids on the Block improve our programs, teachers are asked to complete a short program evaluation form.
