Appreciating Cultural Differences
“New Names”
Suggested Grade Levels
1, 2, 3 and 4
Overview
This popular program introduces children to the concept of culture and how it affects
their lives, while also challenging stereotypes. It explores some of the conflicts
that may arise when people of diverse backgrounds and belief systems come together.
The characters model how to find common ground in similarities and how to approach
differences in a sensitive, caring manner.
Script Scenario
Eleven-year old Nguyen Huy Nam’s family moved from Vietnam to the United States
before Nam was born and he has grown up bi-cultural. Although Nam is proud of his
family’s heritage, he strives to be as “American” as possible with some of his peers.
Nam is upset because everyone mispronounces his name, so he decides to change it.
As he shares his frustration about feeling different with his best friend, Melody,
Nam ultimately comes to value and appreciate his heritage even more.
Objectives
- Explore definitions of culture.
- Explore what it’s like to feel different from your peer group.
- Demonstrate positive multi-cultural interactions, such as: showing friendly interest in another’s culture, empathy, and appreciation of cultural differences.
- Learn to appreciate one’s own cultural background.
Format
This 30-minute program consists of a scripted-story puppet presentation, followed
by a guided question and answer session. During the Q & A time, the puppets reinforce
learning objectives and encourage children to share their questions and concerns.
To extend learning and repeat key lessons, all children receive a take-home Kids
on the Block bookmark imprinted with the program’s messages, and they are encouraged
to write letters or emails to the puppets.
To help Kids on the Block improve our programs, teachers are asked to complete a short program evaluation form.
